Reading Enrichment
Coordinator:

Timeframe: Throughout School
Year
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading enrichment
program for 1st through 5th graders. The purpose
is to encourage reading and includes a computer
program that helps teachers manage and monitor
children's independent reading practice. A student
selects a book at his own reading level and reads
it at his own pace. When finished, the student
takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the
quiz is an indication that he understood what
was read.) AR gives both students and teachers
feedback based on the quiz results: teachers use
this information to help their students set goals
and direct ongoing reading practice; and students
earn points for passing AR quizzes.
More details:
- List
of available AR tests (actual
tests available on campus only)

of books owned by the RSE Library

awards and reading lists
Goals
- Reward students in line with national AR program
standards.
- Recognize students at all grade levels; realizing
that younger grades will not earn the same level
of points as older grades, but still work hard
at reading.
- Recognize students throughout the year.
Reward Program
Students in grades 1- 5 are recognized each 9
weeks for earning a specified number of points
listed below with a personalized bookmark certificate.
These certificates will be awarded during library
time for all students that read the required number
of points during 9 weeks. Earned points are not
cumulative, and each 9 weeks students have another
chance to earn the required number of points for
a bookmark certificate. An additional award is
given at a special AR party in May for students
who read a required number of points for the school
year. This program is in addition to the end-of-the-year
awards ceremony where top readers are recognized.
